A backlink is just a link to your site from another site. Simple as that. There’s no magic formula here. However, how the link affects your site is where the real fun begins. And where many of the online tips and tricks fall short – in both directions: over-hyping (“backlinks are the only way!”) and under-playing (“if you create quality content, people will link to it”).
Here’s the truth: backlinks are a very strong force in SEO; however, they have to be earned and developed through specific channels. Listed below are the nine actual advantages that you will experience with backlinks, roughly ranked based on significance. There is no fluff or hype.
Higher Google Rankings
This is the big one – the reason most people care about backlinks at all.
Google has verified – even through testimony at their own anti-trust hearing – that links continue to be one of the most significant factors in determining page rank. While not the sole factor, they are definitely a huge one.
This is what happens when you use this technique. If a reputable site links to your page, Google will see this as a sign that your page has merit. If enough sites with high authority link to your page, your page can rise in rank. There is nothing subtle about this process. In fact, it’s not uncommon to see pages move from the third page of search results to the first after earning several legitimate quality links, with nothing else on the page changed.
The important thing to remember here is “the right places.” One backlink to your site by a credible news outlet or blog in your field can carry far greater weight than hundreds of backlinks to your site by various other sources, including directories. Google has always given preference to links; therefore, if you have a link to your site from a highly respected source, it will have more influence than a backlink to your site from someone who isn’t recognized as an expert in your area of expertise.
Does that imply that content isn’t important? No way! You’ve got to have something worth being found on search engines. However, if there are two identical pages in terms of content, the page with the better backlink profile will win out over the other page – nearly every time.
Referral Traffic That Actually Converts
Backlinks have a double benefit: they can improve your search engine rankings, and they can be clicked. People focus on the first aspect of backlinks, but they often overlook the second.
Referrals (links) from well-known blogs, news stories, and active forums can drive actual users to your website. But what most people don’t realize is that referred users typically convert at a higher rate than those who come via search. Why? When a user reads an article recommending your business, he/she has already been sold on it. The user trusts the author of the article, and therefore, by association, trusts you.
Think about it. The way a user gets to your site (thoughtfully recommended by an industry newsletter) is in a totally different state of mind than if they arrived at your site via clicking on the seventh link in Google because they had no other options. The user getting to your site via the industry newsletter is curious. The user getting to your site via the seventh link in Google is looking to compare.
This is why I tell clients to stop judging links purely on SEO metrics. A link from a smaller site with a highly engaged, relevant audience can do more for your business than a link from a high-authority site nobody actually reads.
Faster Discovery and Indexing
Google uses the process of “following” links to find new pages. In other words, Google’s search engine crawler follows links from existing pages to other pages on the internet.
In the event that you do not have many (or none) backlinks pointing to your website, Google will likely be slower at finding the new pages you create. It is possible that some of the deeper pages of your website remain unindexed for several weeks if there are no links pointing to those pages. Newly launched websites often still have half their content unindexed a month after launch.
Backlinks help make sure that when someone links to your website they are providing an additional way for Google’s crawlers to locate your content. If you have a good link profile, your site will be crawled more frequently and deeper. New pages will be indexed quicker. Changes made to your site will be noticed sooner.
In addition to being particularly relevant to newly established websites and websites which frequently produce content, it also is important for all websites producing content on a regular basis. In other words, if you are producing content consistently but no one is linking back to your website, you are basically talking to yourself in an empty room, and hoping that Google hears what you have to say. Links will make your “whisper” into a “conversation.”
Brand Authority and Trust
What is more, there is an advantage of SEO that no SEO software will display to you, yet your customers will experience this benefit as soon as possible.
When your company is mentioned and linked to by established publications, relevant industry blogs, or expert sources, there is a shift in how others view your business. At this point, you are not simply “just another” website; you are the company that was featured in those locations.
This is difficult to quantify, however, it is impossible to ignore. On your sales calls, prospects will reference this. Your partners will give you greater credibility. Journalists will be more inclined to use your quotes in future articles – this will lead to additional backlinks and therefore build your website’s authority. This is a positive feedback loop.
I would always recommend that if you want to find the most effective link building technique, you should look for the one that is as close to public relations (PR) as possible. In addition to being able to rank higher in search results with links from authoritative sites, you will also be developing a strong brand identity. This will result in an increase in sales, as well as many other benefits.
A Real Competitive Edge
The “content is king” crowd will not be pleased with this statement. In today’s highly competitive markets, there are so many companies that produce high-quality content.
Seriously. Select any lucrative keyword and review page one. All content is acceptable. Many pieces are outstanding. Content does not differentiate successful marketers from those who are unsuccessful, specifically when financial resources are involved.
The difference between these sites is how much authority they have. To Google, this authority is mainly based on the number of other sites that link to yours.
If you’re prepared to put in the time and effort, this is excellent news. The vast majority of your competition is completely neglecting the importance of building links, or doing it poorly by purchasing low-cost link building services, posting to directories in bulk, and wondering why their search engine results don’t improve. If you consistently and honestly build links over a one-year period, you’ll likely pull ahead of most of your competitors. Because there are very few who have successfully built quality links, the standard is much lower than many people realize.
Relationships That Outlast Any Algorithm Update
When you earn backlinks, you have to do what most other website owners don’t – connect with people who work in your field.
Guest posting is developing relationships with editorial staff. Digital Public Relations is developing relationships with members of the press. Broken link building is assisting other websites in fixing problems on their sites. Resource page outreach is learning about the individuals that make up the community of your particular area of interest.
In addition to their individual values, these connections are also valuable in other ways. When an editor publishes your guest post on their site, it is likely they will be interested in reviewing your next pitch. When a journalist uses one of your quotes in an article, they will often contact you again when writing similar articles. And, when you connect with another blogger within your same industry, there are numerous opportunities for collaboration, learning, or potentially forming partnerships.
Algorithms evolve. Google rolled out new versions, ranking changed, and the same old methods did not work anymore. However, a network of genuine professional relationships will pay off for as long as Google exists. This is one of the best ways to protect your business from the algorithm changes made by Google. And link building is the way to create this type of relationship.
Long-Term Compounding Value
The majority of your marketing dollars are being used as “rent.” When you quit spending on advertising, you will no longer receive visitors to your website. If you cease to post on social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc., the number of people who see your posts will decrease quickly.
In other words, backlinks are a form of ownership. When you create a quality backlink today, it will continue to pass value to your website next year, and for many years thereafter. Backlinks do not have an expiration date. No one is going to “turn off” your backlink. Also, as the authority of the linking site increases, so does the value of the backlink you received from it.
The fact that the effects of link building compound is what makes it the most cost-effective form of SEO on a long-term basis. As you build links, each subsequent link becomes somewhat easier to obtain (due to the strength of your website being a better pitch), and the entire collection of links continues to work for you while you sleep.
There is, however, a catch; and as you might expect, there is always a catch. It takes some time for this to take effect. During the initial period of building links (usually the first few months) you may feel as if you are rolling a large rock up a steep hill. Eventually, however, the rock will start moving down the hill by itself. Unfortunately, many individuals give up at the point where they are still trying to roll the rock up the hill. Please do not become part of that group of people.
Stronger Local SEO
If you serve a local market, backlinks do something extra for you.
Google’s local rankings rely primarily upon the prominence of a business – i.e., how familiar and credible it is. Links from local news outlets, community blogs, local chamber of commerce websites, local events, and neighborhood directory listings all contribute to this.
Local links can determine who ranks higher than another local business with similar on-page SEO. This plays out time and again, in market after market.
The great thing about local link building is that it can be easier to do than national link building. For example, if you were to sponsor a youth sports team or join your local chamber of commerce, you would be engaging in regular business practices, which will naturally lead to getting links. In addition, if you could get the local newspaper to cover you because you did something truly noteworthy, this would also result in a link. Finally, speaking at a community event is another way to gain links. All of these examples represent typical business activities that result in links being created to your website.
Increased Domain Authority
Let’s talk about the metric everyone loves to argue about.
Domain Authority is a scale that ranges from 1 to 100 which indicates how likely a website will be able to rank on search engine results pages. DA is not a factor for Google. Google does not use DA in its algorithm. However, DA has shown to correlate with actual ranking power due to being constructed with the exact same raw data Google uses to determine the strength of a website’s backlink profile.
Quality links to your site are the most important factor in increasing your domain authority (DA). As long as you continue to build quality links, your DA will increase. This is a very simple concept. Although the DA score itself does not directly lead to rank, as you watch your DA score grow, you can see if your efforts to build quality links have been successful – it’s a good way to assess how healthy your link building program is.
A useful tip: DA has a logarithmic scale, therefore, you will see quick increases in DA at first but as time goes on, the increases will become slower. For instance, if you are currently at 10 DA, it may only require a few quality links to get to 25. On the other hand, if you are at 50 DA, it will require much more time and energy to reach 60 DA. Therefore, set your goals based on your current level of DA and look at how well your competitors are doing in terms of DA, not just the absolute number. To create a systematic approach for increasing Domain Authority the right way, first perform a realistic assessment of what your existing link profile looks like.
The Honest Caveat: Not All Backlinks Help
I could not have written this article without a disclaimer as to what I am stating here. A reader of the nine advantages listed above may think that having many links means you will be doing better than someone who does not have as many links.
No, it doesn’t. Toxic backlinks – which include those from link farms, spammy directory listings, hacked websites, and the “10,000 links for $5” offers – actually harm your search engine optimization (SEO) efforts. These types of links may lead to lower rankings, or worse, cause Google to issue a manual penalty against your site. Recovery from a manual penalty often requires several months.
This is an easy rule to remember – if a link can be acquired easily in large quantities, then it is most likely useless (or worse). Links that are obtained through legitimate means – outreach, relationship building, and creating quality content – will always be more valuable. There isn’t any way to obtain links using a “shortcut” and still have those links survive Google’s anti-spam efforts.
This is why I would prefer to have a client receive five high-quality links each year rather than 500 average quality links. High quality links are more than just a bonus when it comes to link building; they are what defines the overall strategy. If you do not know if your existing method of link building is benefiting your business or harming it, then professional link building services that utilize manual outreach to actual websites should be chosen instead of any bulk package.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many backlinks do I need to see benefits?
The number of links doesn’t matter as much as the quality. One very good link will do more for your search engine rankings than many low-quality links. If you are a new site, even just a few high-quality links from related and authoritative sites could make a significant difference in your search engine ranking. The most important thing is the authority and trust worthiness of the site that is linking to you; the total number of links does not matter. It would be better to focus on building as many high-quality links as possible, rather than trying to hit a certain number.
How long does it take for backlinks to work?
Normally from one week to a few months. Google needs time to find the link, recrawl the page where the link was placed, and then use that information to assess your website. It is common for new or low authority websites to experience some type of change in ranking position in the first month or two after they obtain their initial quality links. On the other hand, established websites competing in highly competitive markets usually require continued efforts over a period of time (usually many months) prior to experiencing any noticeable changes in ranking positions.
Do nofollow backlinks have any benefits?
Yes, just not the direct ranking kind. Nofollow links still send referral traffic, build brand visibility, and contribute to a natural-looking link profile – a site with zero nofollow links looks manipulated. Take every legitimate link you’re offered, but don’t build your strategy around nofollow links if rankings are the goal.
Can backlinks hurt my website?
Yes. Links from spammy, irrelevant, or manipulative sources – link farms, private blog networks, bulk packages – can drag down your rankings and, in serious cases, trigger a Google manual penalty. Audit your backlink profile periodically, remove the worst offenders when possible, and disavow what you can’t remove. And never buy bulk link packages.
Are backlinks still worth it in 2026?
Absolutely. Google has confirmed that links continue to be one of the most important factors for search engine rankings. In competitive industries, links can often be the only difference between two or more pages that have similar content. Although links continue to be a significant ranking factor, the effectiveness of using low-quality link spam techniques continues to decline. On the other hand, genuine, editorially based links that come from legitimate web sites will continue to provide value to your search engine optimization efforts. It appears that although the strategy changed, the principle remained the same.
